As I have worked on more projects, I have found the amount of small off-cuts has greatly increased! I know I will make something with them at some point, so I’ve been saving all the reasonably sized chunks I’ve cut off. The problem is finding somewhere to store all of these!
I previously made a storage crate for somewhere to store the various acquired pieces of wood, both scrap and salvaged pallet wood, but this is too large for the small scrap pieces. So I began working on a solution and stumbled across this video here, where they have designed a simple small crate made from recovered pallet wood. I thought it would be perfect for collecting all the ~10 x 10 cm random chunks of wood from the various projects.

It didn’t actually take very long to assemble this, as once I had cut all the pieces to length, it was just a case of screwing all the various sections together. The finished version is somewhat rough and ready, and hasn’t had a sand or any finish applied. But as it is a storage container for the workshop, which is already partially filled with off-cuts and sawdust, I think it is serving its purpose well! And it is pleasingly sturdy – I made sure to use reasonably substantial screws for each of the joints, as there is no glue to reinforce them (so I can reuse the wood at a later date if required).

So I am very happy with the finished version and it is already being well used. I now just have to think of something else to do with all these small oddly shaped off-cuts! 🔨
