The Return of the Woodworking Scientist

Hello! It has been quite a while since I last wrote on here, as this blog became one of those things that got pushed back as a result of life changes. And then it was something that was always on my list to restart, so I can share my thoughts and projects. Principally as a way for me to record things I’ve made and remind myself of fitness and life achievements when I look back.

A source of calm

From my last post a year and a half ago now back in August 2019, an awful lot has happened in my life and in the world generally! And I want to use this blog as a way of focusing my attention on positive things and sharing successful projects and things I have accomplished, rather than dwelling on a lot of negative feelings which I know so many people are dealing with right now.

Dusting off a blog…

Since that post back in 2019, I have finished traveling so much for work and am now relocated permanently to the south west of England. I changed roles and am in a new team at work and challenged myself to complete a whole range of fitness goals and woodworking projects, which I am really looking forward to sharing with you! I have continued to make things for family and friends, as well as shop projects over the past 18 months, although not blogging about them, so I will have a lot of posts to share over the next few months. My plan is to write weekly, but that will be fairly flexible so that writing remains a fun activity rather than a more rigid or frustrating chore. I hold the opinion that we should seek to do creative and fun things that make us happy in our spare time and if something stops being fun or starts being a source of stress, then another hobby might be better for a while. For example, over the past couple of years I have been painting on and off – something I have never been particularly good at as it requires fine motor control and I am rather clumsy! But I was given a paint-by-numbers as a present 2-3 years ago and I found it actually really fun and relaxing. I am still working on the same picture now, as it is something I dip in and out of due to the amount of concentration required, but I will definitely share the finished painting here when it is done. And I have another awesome paint-by-numbers lined up for when this one is done too, so even more motivation to sit down and relax!

If not now, then when?

So, I’m looking forward to sharing projects again and now seems like a perfect time to do it! 🔨
