Award Holders

A very simple project this week – my team at work were nominated in the Collaboration category for the Annual Awards and we ended up being in the top three Finalists! We were awarded a small plastic trophy, which looks a bit like a drinks coaster, and has the award details printed on to it. As the awards all came without a stand however, I had a few ideas for how to solve that!

I decided to make a holder for everyone in the team, if they wanted one, and chose a piece of pine from my every increasing scrap wood pile. After working out the necessary dimensions, I routed a grove along the centre of the workpiece. I made sure the depth was sufficient to hold the award firmly (always good to sneak up on a fit!) and then used my table saw to rip the piece to a thinner width on each side of the groove. I used a stop block and my mitre saw to make a series of repeated cuts until I had a number of the holders all of an identical length with the grove running the length of the holder.

Each piece had a thorough hand sanding to smooth them out and then I stained them with some Danish oil to bring out the grain. I left them to dry fully over the weekend and then took them into work at the beginning of the week- I put them on the table in the office for everyone to pick up over the course of the week (some office time, some working from home) and I got a lot of positive feedback from the team. The holders definitely help to show off the award and also encouraged people to actually display the awards – one of my team members put their award in the window in our office and mine came home and sits on the shelf behind my desk! 🔨
