Shelving for the house and outdoor storage

One of the problems with moving house is that all the furniture you already own rarely fits easily in the new place! Having moved house only a few months ago, it is still an ongoing challenge to work out the best layout for everything in a very different shaped and sized house.

Cutting to size with a jigsaw

Some of the items of furniture that were a struggle to fit in in the old house were two shelving units for storing food in the house and some smaller shelving for outside in the storage shed. When we moved in there a couple of years back, due to the position of some kitchen cupboards, one of the sets of shelves was too tall to fit underneath. After careful measuring and working out the best layout for the shelves, I used my jigsaw and a square to cut each leg to the required length and then adjusted all the shelves to fit the new height. I sanded over the cut edges to soften the corners and clean up the saw marks.

I reorganised the shelves in the second set to fit around the radiator and fitted additional shelves that I removed from the first set.

The second set of shelves

I also cut another set of shelves in half so it would fit in the garden storage container in the garden. This worked really well for storing plant pots, compost, hand tools and other assorted garden items that would have been a pain to have on the floor.

The shelves in the garden storage

This storage container was very useful but had to stay at the old house as it belonged to the landlord. As there is no outside storage at the new house, and I want to keep the garage usable as my workshop, there was a clear need for something similar. I will share my adventures preparing the garden space, laying slabs and building a new outdoor storage unit in a future post! 🔨
