Christmas presents – “Couple in the rain” artwork

The majority of projects I make are either practical gifts for other people or functional items for the house or workshop. Last year I decided to make something artistic and creative for my wife.

I found a silhouette of a couple huddled under an umbrella online which I really liked and I imagined it could look really good in wood. I printed out the image to use as a template and then used my jigsaw to cut the shape out of some pallet wood I had in the workshop. I drilled a hole in the centre and used my coping saw to make the shape of the faces leaning in together and the legs.

I added an extra piece of wood to the base to act as a foot for the workpiece to stand up and then thoroughly sanded up to 180 grit before applying a mahogany stain to bring out the grain. I really love how this turned out, as the striped grain makes me think of water running off the umbrella. 🔨
