Following the particularly hot summer we have had over the past few months, my eight year old laptop, which managed to survive a large quantity of data analysis, an entire PhD thesis and a multitude of house moves, finally decided it would function no more. Heat is not good for laptops!
As I am particularly careful around backing things up, I only had a month or so of photos not yet backed up on external hard drives or in the cloud. After some exploration of exactly what I could get my laptop to do, I managed to boot it up to a BIOS screen and with the careful application of a second computer, two portable hard drives and a USB stick (!), I managed to run a full file backup using AMOEI software (not sponsored) to capture all my documents and photos.

I have now obtained a new desktop PC which has (literally!) 1000x the processing power of my old laptop and significantly more storage on both a standard hard drive (HDD) as well as a solid state drive (SSD) which greatly improves how quickly I can access files and software. The speed at which I am able to boot it up is very impressive, particularly as I was used to turning my laptop on and then going to get a drink while I waited for it to get to the login screen!

After installing all the various bits of software I need, one of the hardest things was then recalling the huge numbers of passwords for all the different accounts I have. I had captured passwords within my browser but not all of them seemed to transfer across when I signed in on my new computer. Fortunately I managed to recall the password to get back into my blog, so I can now continue sharing my various woodworking projects. Lots more posts to come! 🔨
