Holder for try squares

As part of my continuation to give everything in the workshop a home, I realised I didn’t have a proper way to store my different sized try squares and long ruler. Time to rectify that!

I started by laying the try squares out to work out the approximate size of board I would need to mount some holders on. I found a scrap piece of plywood and then set about positioning supports in between the long ruler sections of the squares and under the thicker section to hold them in place when the board was mounted.

Once I had the positions worked out and drawn out on the board, I glued the supports in place, using lots of clamps to hold the pieces firmly while the glue dried. I made sure to clean up any glue squeeze out as I went along to minimise any clean up later and ensure the squares would still fit easily into the holders.

Once the glue was dried, I gave the holders a light sanding to avoid getting any splinters when grabbing the squares. I then mounted it to the end of the mitre saw bench using several wood screws at the top and bottom (pre-drilling first to avoid splitting the wood).

I also fitted a round head screw into the lower block on which I could hang my long ruler to also give it a place to live.

I’m really pleased with how this quick project came together – it’s not particularly decorative, but it will work in the short-to-medium term to keep the workshop more tidy until I can build an improved holder as part of my longer-term shop upgrades. And workshop furniture and jigs are never as fun as finishing a proper project to give to someone, so in this case, “good enough is good enough”, so I can get on to the next fun thing to make! 🔨
