Woodworking square holder

Continuing to ensure everything in the workshop has a designated home, I decided to create a holder for my square, so I always know where it is.

I decided on a sort of slot design, where I could simply slide the square into the holder after use and allowing me to quickly grab it when needed. As this was a shop project and didn’t need to look particularly decorative, I grabbed some scrap mdf to make the holder.

I cut one piece to cover the full width needed for the square and then two narrower strips to run along the edges the height of the frame of the square, with then two wider strips on top. I used glue to secure these all together, clamping the pieces in place until the glue dried.

The letter “T” shape allows the square to slide in and out easily while providing a secure storage method.

I fitted a final piece of mdf to the back of the holder to prevent the square being able to go all the way through the holder and fall out the other side.

Once the glue had dried on the final piece, I gave the holder a sand by hand to round over the edges to make it more comfortable to use. I also removed the overhang of the strips to provide a uniform dimension to the holder.

Finally I secured the holder underneath the centre section of the mitre saw bench, meaning the square is within easy reach for making marks before I make cuts with the saw. And I now know where the square will always be – provided I make sure to put it away again after use! 🔨
