Getting a new mobile phone is always a bit of a period of change while you get used to the new size, shape and feel. One of the things we’ve discovered with smart phones continuing to grow is the need for a slightly larger phone holder – so here is a new version of one I’ve made before!
My wife got a new mobile phone recently and the Cat phone holder I made previously wasn’t holding the phone at quite the right angle due to the larger screen and overall phone size. The last couple of months have been particularly busy at work but I made time to carry on my way to switch off and designed a variation to the cat phone holder that would work with the larger phone.

I used the mdf template I created last time and extended the tail so the phone could lean back more against the cat body. I used a piece of pine 2×4 left over from a previous project as the width provides a solid and stable base for supporting a phone.

After rough cutting the shape, I refined the curves and used files and sandpaper to round the head and shape the ears.

I received a Dremel for my birthday last year and I have used it quite a lot to add smaller details to projects. I decided to try adding the face details to this version of the cat phone holder and sketched them out in pencil first, before adding grooves into the pine using a small carving tool.

I didn’t have anything on hand to highlight the engraved features, so I will have to have a think and figure out what will work best.

I finished the phone holder with Danish oil to darken the colour slightly, leaving it overnight to fully dry. The cat phone holder now lives on our kitchen counter and is used almost constantly now by my wife when cooking and when I am washing up! 🔨
