Dust hose mount

One of the challenges of working with wood is safely capturing the amount of saw dust generated, especially when using power tools. I decided to make a mount to help me capture dust when drilling.

I made a base for my drill press stand previously and as I have been doing a lot of drilling for various recent projects, decided to make a better dust hose mount to replace the awkward temporary setup using clamps.

As the drill is held a short distance up the stand, I realised there was space underneath for a mount. I drilled a hole the same size as the drill press stand pole using a Forstner bit.

I drilled a second hole perpendicular to the first one, so the dust hose can be positioned directly under the drill.

This first version worked well, but I realised there was additional unnecessary material above and below the hole for the dust hose, which blocked the drill from being lowered sufficiently for drill into thinner material.

I used my table saw to slim the mount down and then hand sanded to round over the corners, so I don’t injure myself moving it about or if I hit my hand on it.

The finished mount is very useful and I have already used it several times, on a range of thicknesses of materials. I might consider adding some kind of tightening mechanism in future, so I can ensure the hose remains at the right height, but for now, I simply position it on the surface of the workpiece and that works really well. Onto my next project! 🔨
